Glastonbury, the UK’s most renowned summer festival, has made a significant decision regarding disposable vapes. With a staggering capacity of 200,000 attendees, the festival has decided to ban the use of disposable vapes due to concerns over their environmental impact. This move has ignited a broader conversation about the recycling and disposal of disposable vapes in the UK.

Neil McLaren, CMO at vaping.com, acknowledges the importance of addressing this issue and applauds Glastonbury for taking a stand. However, he believes that the ban should also extend to cigarettes, considering their well-documented harm and status as the world’s most littered item. In this article, we explore the environmental implications of disposable vapes and offer a greener alternative for vapers concerned about the festival ban.

Disposable Vapes: An Environmental Hazard:;FAQs About Disposable Vapes

Disposable vapes including zero nicotine disposable vape have gained popularity over the years due to their convenience and ease of use. However, their widespread usage has led to mounting concerns about the environmental impact they pose. These single-use devices are typically made from plastic, metal, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and other non-biodegradable materials. When not properly disposed of, they end up in landfills or, worse, as litter in our environment. For more information, you can read ‘A Guide to Recycling Vape Products’

Glastonbury Vape Ban Takes the Lead:

Glastonbury’s decision to ban disposable vapes demonstrates a worthy commitment to the environment. By banning disposables at the festival, Glastonbury aims to curb the damage caused by their improper disposal.

While this move is certainly a step in the right direction, Neil McLaren argues that Glastonbury could go further by also prohibiting cigarettes. This would not only address the health hazards associated with smoking but also significantly reduce the staggering amount of cigarette butts discarded annually, an estimated 4.5 trillion cigarette butts discarded each year.

Cigarettes, in addition to being considerably more harmful than vaping, contribute to the issue of second-hand smoke, which is unique to combustible cigarettes. Therefore, McLaren suggests that banning cigarettes at Glastonbury would provide a valuable service to attendees, particularly families attending the festival.

Embracing a Greener Alternative with a More Eco Vape Option:

For vapers concerned about the Glastonbury ban on disposable vapes, vaping.com recommends embracing a more environmentally friendly eco vape option of reusable devices with refillable vape juices. These more ‘eco vapes’ offer the same convenience as disposables but with the added benefit of significantly reducing waste. By reusing the pod and refilling it with e-liquid, vapers can help minimise the environmental impact associated with disposable vapes. Additionally, it is crucial to remember to recycle vape juice bottles once they are no longer needed, contributing to more sustainable vaping.

In this article, we’ll take you through some of the main types of vapes and how they work.

If you’re new to vaping and just getting started, you’re bound to have questions around how a vape works. Vapes come in many different shapes and sizes, but they all have the same basic components: a battery, coil and a tank or pod. Depending on the type of vape you want, some can be more complex and customisable, while others are simpler and easy to use.

How Do Disposable Vapes Work?FAQs About Disposable Vapes

Disposable vapes are non-rechargeable devices. There are many disposable vapes available in the UK, which come with a pre-filled e-liquid in a variety of different flavours and high nicotine strengths (up to 20 mg). The moment you remove them from their packaging, and peel away any hygiene seals, they’re ready to use.

Disposable vapes only last for a short amount of time. Once you’ve used up all of the pre-filled e-liquid inside, you’ll need to responsibly dispose of them – hence the name. This makes them great for smokers wanting to try vaping out before committing to a more long-term device, or for anyone who lives an on-the-go lifestyle.

Disposable vapes are powered by a battery. This battery heats up the coil, which in turn vaporises the e-liquid and produces the flavoured vapour you inhale. Due to their simplicity, they’re super user friendly and don’t require much vaping knowledge. At Vaping.com, we have a wide range of disposables available from different brands. Check out the disposables we stock online.

How Do Refillable Vape Pens Work?FAQs About Disposable Vapes

A refillable vape pen is simply a vape that’s styled in the shape of a pen. Like most vapes, it has a chamber which you fill with your e-liquid of choice. Refillable vape devices allow you to change the nicotine strengths and e-liquid flavours, so you can customise your vaping experience and try out different flavours and strengths of e-liquid until you find your perfect match.

If you’ve ever wondered “how does a vape pen work?” we’ll break down the three major components of them now.

The first main part of a vape is the battery. Depending on the device, some vapes allow for temperature and wattage control, which manage the power output of the battery in a vape pen. This gives you the freedom to choose your preferred wattage from the device’s range, tailoring your overall vaping experience.

The next component is the tank. This is where the coil is located and where the vape juice is stored inside the device. Tanks come in a variety of different sizes, and some vape pens give you the option of buying replacement ones. At the bottom of the vape, there are air holes that pull air into the device. Some vape pens allow you to adjust this feature, so you can limit or open up the airflow – according to your preference. Top tip: limiting the airflow where possible can give you a tighter draw, a noticeable throat hit and subtle vapour.

The mouthpiece is the third main section to a vape pen. The mouthpiece is a tip usually on the top of the vape pen where you inhale and draw vapour with your mouth.

How Do Pod Systems Work?

Compared to disposable vape pens, pod systems are slightly more advanced. They’re refillable, rechargeable and sometimes customisable with replacement parts. While they require a little more maintenance than disposables, in the long run this doesn’t equate to much, and looking after a device can mean it lasts as long as the manufacturer intends. Pods are longer-lasting, and can be more cost-effective than using disposables long-term.

Some pod systems have a firing button to trigger the vape, while others are draw activated, and some can even be both. They also come with an LED battery light that indicates when the device needs charging.

Some advanced pod systems come with adjustable airflow features which cater to mouth-to-lung (MTL) or direct-to-lung (DTL) vaping options – or sometimes both. Learn more about these vaping styles in our Mouth to Lung and Direct Lung VaHomeping Guide. Pod systems are small and portable vaping devices that typically consist of a battery, pod and coil. They’re designed to be easy to use and convenient, great for beginners or those always on the go.

The pod itself is a small cartridge that contains both the vape juice and coil. Some are refillable, allowing you to fill them with your preferred e-liquid. Other pods are prefilled and disposable, so you’ll need to replace them once used up. The coil is a small heating element that vapourises the e-liquid inside the pod. So, when you activate the pod system, the battery sends power to the coil. From there, it heats up and vapourises the e-liquid.

How Do Box Mod Kits Work?

Box mod vapes are some of the most customisable vapes available on the market. Box mod kits are typically larger and more complex compared to other vapes. These are sub-ohm devices, designed to vape lower nicotine strength e-liquids (e.g., 0 mg, 3 mg and 6 mg). They’re ideal for those who aren’t satisfied with simpler devices, and want something bigger with more power.

Box mod kits usually consist of a vape mod (also called a box mod, where the battery is housed), a tank and a charger. The vape mod is the device that controls the power and settings of the kit. It often displays important information like battery life, wattage and temperature control. Box mods always come with buttons and a screen, allowing you to adjust the settings for optimal customisation. The tank is where the coil is housed, and where the vape stores e-liquid.

Box Mod Kits Work?

Typically, box mods have a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. These are either inbuilt or replaceable 18650 or 21700 batteries. In general, lithium-ion batteries should have a good rechargeable lifespan and can last a year or two. To use a vape mod kit, you first need to attach the tank to the mod. Then, fill the tank with e-liquid and let it soak into the coil for a few minutes. From there, adjust the settings on the vape to your liking. Then, press the firing button to activate the coil and start vaping!

To get the most out of your vape, it’s important to understand what kind of experience you want it to provide. Are you new to vaping? Do you value the freedom to customise? Or just want something simple to use? From there, you can choose a vape that best suits your needs. At Vaping.com, we have a wide range of vapes for new to even the most experienced vapers.

Global charities and health campaigners are calling on smokers to quit their deadly cigarette habit on World No Tobacco Day.

Cancer Research UK has released new analysis which estimates one person dies every five minutes from tobacco in Britain and has called on the government to do more to help smokers quit.

It has launched a petition to coincide with World No Tobacco Day today, asking for the Prime Minister to establish a “Smokefree Fund ” which would help pay for the cost of tobacco control, which it says is seriously underfunded.

Meanwhile, a group of leading tobacco harm reduction groups including World Vapers’ Alliance have been highlighting vaping’s role in cutting death and disease from smoking with the launch of World Vape Day yesterday (May 30th).

Now in its fourth year, the event saw the worldwide vaping community champion global harm reduction efforts and the benefits of using e-cigarettes – which Public Health England deems to be 95 per cent safer than tobacco – as an effective way of switching away from cigarettes.

And on World No Tobacco Day they – along with members of the European Parliament and consumer activists – are pushing for a more open approach towards harm reduction in the EU, with a focus not on fighting vaping but looking at how becoming a smoke-free country can be achieved – such as Sweden, which is about to celebrate that status this year.

Michael Landl, Director of the World Vapers’ Alliance, said today:

World No Tobacco Day is a sad reminder that a new approach in the fight against smoking is needed”.

Instead of fighting less harmful alternatives like vaping, the EU and WHO must start accepting reality: harm reduction works! Sweden is becoming the first smoke-free country this year due to a consumer-friendly harm reduction approach. It is high time to learn from the Swedish experience and thereby save millions of lives. With a smart harm reduction approach, we can reach a smoke-free Europe way sooner than the target.

Sweden is about to become the first country in the world to achieve a daily smoking rate below 5%, a benchmark to qualify it as a smoke-free country, 17 years ahead of the EU’s target while almost all other countries are failing.

The drop in smokers is thanks to the country’s use of legal alternative nicotine products including snus and e-cigarettes.  According to Global State Of Tobacco Harm Reduction, Sweden has 92,000 vapers in the country, giving an adult vaping prevalence of 1.1 per cent, with vape products sold legally with vape packaging that

contains a health warning.

MEP Charlie Weimers said:

Policy should be evidence-based. WHO will soon classify Sweden as Europe’s first smoke-free country because of harm reduction policies and widespread use of snus.”

To reinforce the impact of the Swedish model, MEP Johann Nissinen said:

It is clear that smoking kills, and we need to do everything we can to prevent those unnecessary deaths. Sweden is the best example of how this is achievable, namely with a pragmatic harm reduction approach. It is the only country in the EU where snus is legal and popular with 18% of the population using it. Consuming snus instead of cigarettes saved many Swedish lives. It is time that the EU Commission expects this reality and starts acting accordingly.”

Carissa Düring, a spokesperson for a non-profit consumer organisation, Considerate Pouchers, added:

It has always surprised me why not more countries allow a product like snus that has helped millions quit smoking

and has been safely used for more than 200 years in Sweden. Sweden is a natural experiment that shows that harm reduction works. The low smoking rates speak for themselves.”

World Vaping Day comes a month after the UK’s own vaping awareness month – VApril – the world’s largest

vaping education campaign – which offers a wealth of information, advice and resources to encourage smokers

to make a “life-changing switch” to e-cigarettes.

And it’s not too late for UK smokers who want to join the estimated 4.3million who have already taken the

plunge as the VApril website continues to offer advice about finding the right vaping device, flavours and

nicotine strengths to give them the best chance to kick their cigarette habit as well as videos and stories from

those who made the switch.

A five-step ‘Start Vaping, Stop Smoking’ guide designed by experts which clearly sets out how to make a

successful switch, is also available to download.

And with only 34% of adults who smoke accurately believing vaping was less harmful than smoking in 2021,

according to a government review, there are plenty of facts and figures to address any concerns or queries

participants may have.

There is also a new 2023 guide on vaping responsibly – from how you can take a responsible approach to vaping

in public to disposing of your device in an environmentally-friendly way.

Organiser of the campaign, UKVIA’s John Dunne highlighted the importance of letting smokers know vaping is

one of the most effective ways of quitting, while echoing Director of World Vapers’ Alliance, Michael Landl’s

opinion that negative campaigning surrounding vaping is damaging smokers’ chances of a “better life”.

He said:

Research time and time again has evidenced that vaping is the most effective way to quit, much more so than

nicotine patches and gums.”

And the need for education is greater than ever before with many segments of the media, as well as highly

questionable, unsubstantiated, and misleading research, putting serious doubts into the minds of smokers looking to

quit their habits by switching to vapes, as well as those who have already managed to give up through vaping.

We continue to see regular research and news stories with no backbone. Research which says vaping ‘could’ or

may’ lead to health issues. Stories which suggest individuals have health conditions because of vaping despite the

fact they previously smoked for many years or are dual users. These are just two examples but there are many more.
